Speed-Read With Ditto (Text Annotations)

You thought Ditto only helped you type, didn't you?

Well, actually, yes. But some users read with Ditto to annotate text without interrupting their train of thought. Whether you're doing research for a paper or annotating text, Ditto will help you organize those notes faster so you can focus on reading.

Research

Doing research for a paper can be daunting when a variety of sources are required. During the initial phase you need to scan through books, online references, magazines and newspapers. Capturing the essence of each source is critical to creating a solid paper with accurate information. For example, Ditto can be configured to expand the following research related shortcuts:

  • ;pp → place of publication
  • ;pn → page numbers
  • ;ww → http:/www.$|.com ("$|" will be replaced with the cursor)
  • ;cd → creation date

I know, I know. As a fast typer, you can type this up yourself and save yourself from setting up these shortcuts. But what if you have 30 sources or you research many papers with a few sources?. The question becomes, how much more productive can you be if the redundant text is typed by Ditto so you can maintain a consistent train of thought throughout your research phase. Studies have shown we become more productive and minimize mistakes when we are able to focus on a single topic.

Annotating

This flows easily into text annotation. Whether you're an editor, instructor, or researcher, annotating text in electronic form can be reduced to simple shortcuts to avoid typing repetitive comments.

As a researcher, shortcuts can be configured to:

  • Signal where important information can be found with key words or symbols in the margin.
  • Write short summaries in the margin at the end of sub-units.
  • Write the questions in the margin next to the section where the answer is found.

As an instructor or editor, shortcuts can be configured to type:

  • "Check spelling"
  • "Check grammer"
  • "Please elaborate/Unclear"
  • "Combine into single concept"
  • "Please provide source here"
  • "Review this, off topic"
